In the movie, The Edge of Tomorrow, Tom Cruise and his co-star, Emily Blunt, relive one day over and over until they finally get every step right in order to defeat the aliens seeking to wipe out humanity. I wonder if any of us would like the ability to change every misstep we made in 2017? Think of the effort to undo every mistake, every misspoken word until everything was perfect? And until we had fixed those mistakes our lives could not move forward.
God did not create us to live stuck in the past. We must move on by grace. The Scripture says, “So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. For the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you through Christ Jesus from the power of sin that leads to death.” Romans 8:1-2.
We do not get to re-live the same day until we get it right. Instead, we must own our actions, confess our failures, rejoice in our victories, embrace God’s grace and move forward into the next day. We don’t have the power to change anything about 2017. You and I must march into 2018 with the wisdom we have gained from our choices, in order to fully mature as believers. We are freed from the power of sin to live a life bathed in the forgiveness and kindness of our Heavenly Father.
The older I get, the more I give thanks that Jesus Christ lived a perfect life on his first and only try. He did not need to do anything over. Without His sacrifice to cover ALL of our sins, there would be no hope for anyone to inherit eternal life. “Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous, no one who does what is right and never sins.” Ecc. 7:20. The One exception being the Son of God, the Savior of the Word, the Lord Emmanuel, Jesus! Embrace His Perfection in 2018.
